Westport Innovations introduced a new enhanced spark-ignited (ESI) natural gas system. This new technology is reported to provide 10% improvements in power and torque over base diesel engines and reaches comparable fuel economy. Additionally, the ESI natural gas system provides up to 40% brake thermal efficiency compared to the 25-30% brake thermal efficiency of a typical spark ignited natural gas engine. The ESI combustion system is designed mainly for sub-9-liter engines for class 6 and 7 truck applications.
